On May 6, 1970, then PFC Larry G. Kier (A/2-501 IN) and PFC Refugio
T. Teran (E/2-501 IN), 101st ABN DIV to defend an ammunition storage
area 10 miles east-northeast of Khe Sahn, Vietnam. At roughly 0500H,
North Vietnamese regulars (NVA) overran the area. During the brutal
battle that continued for hours, the napalm stores and over 1000 rounds
of 155mm artillery shells "cooked off". Larry Kier and Tom Teran were
seen running toward a barricade and were believed to have reached firing
positions behind it. The ammunition storage area 20 meters from the area
was hit and exploded. The next day search effort could not locate Larry
Kier or Refugio Teran. They was classified as missing in action (MIA).
On January 29, 1996 a Vietnamese turned over remains he had found while
digging for metal near an old foxhole. The 2 femur sections and 8 teeth
parts matched Larry Kier by DNA analysis. On March 30, 2002 SSG Larry
Kier's remains were buried with full military honors in Owingsville
Cemetery. |
