DAVID MEIER |
SGT David Meier was with us in 1970 on Firebase Granite and Henderson. He was wounded on Henderson. He was sent to Japan and then Great Lakes Hospital. |
On 2 May 2019 David posted on our Guestbook: I think about it every year Henderson that is. This coming Monday May 6 will be 49 years from the date I was on that fire base that morning. I was one of the FNG. I was only in Nam a short time. My first combat was on Granite. After there we went to the rear for a few days before going to Henderson. I never really got to know many guys the short time I was there. I was in a bunker on Henderson with four other who I don’t even remember there names. After all hell broke out were defending our bunker when a grenade was tossed in our bunker. I was on the left they where on my right. It landed by my left foot. We all exited out the right side which made me the end guy when it went off. When I came to I was alone I am sure the other guys thought I was dead. I remember crawling up the hill to the top under fire. At the top a medic was working on other wounded and after a while he worked on me. I remember captain Mitchell coming by and thanking us all and wishing us well. I learned and seen a lot in my short time there. I was fortunate to get on some of the first medivacs. I was in the hospital for quite some time and moved around. I was then sent to Japan for quite sometime. I was then sent to Great Lakes Naval hospital state side where they took the last shrapnel out of my foot. God Bless all our brothers who died on Granite and Henderson. |
